At least thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
